The woman whose battered and decomposed body was found in a barrel, yesterday, at R and S Street, Belvedere, Corentyne, Berbice has been identified. Her husband was today arrested for the murder.
While investigators have not yet identified the victim, this news agency has been informed that the deceased only moved to the village recently with her husband, Suraj Veersammy—an alcoholic.
Guyana Standard has been informed that Veersammy was arrested by the police this morning in Sheet Anchor, East Canje.
According to information received, when the body was discovered yesterday, residents told the police that they had not seen the couple for a while and suspected that it might have been Veersammy’s wife since the couple fought often.
When the arrest was made, the suspect had marks on his body, suggesting that he was involved in a fight.
Reports are that residents noticed the barrel in the trench for sometime but assumed it was filled with garbage. It was after a foul stench began emanating yesterday that one resident went to investigate and found the body in the trench.
According to information received, the body matched the description of the suspect’s wife.
