In a bizarre case today, an eyewitness to a robbery was sent to do time in jail. He and his accomplice were each sentenced to serve a term of imprisonment of four years and six months on a joint robbery charge.
One of them confessed to the court that after witnessing a robbery in which a man was relieved of his cell phone—he cornered the perpetrator—snatched the phone and made good his escape.
But instead of the perpetrator being charged, he and his accomplice were charged for robbing the robber.
Donovan Richardson, 21 of Riverview Ruimveldt and Anthony Prince, 18, admitted that on May 15, at Hadfield Street, Georgetown, they robbed Osafo Hale of a cell phone valued $15,000 and other articles totaling $56,000.
However, Richardson was the one who told the court that he saw when Hale was attacked by an “anti-man.”
Before sentence was passed on Richardson he told the court “I been passing my way good, good and all of a sudden I saw an “anti-man” snatched a man phone. And so I decided to snatched the phone from him (the anti-man) and put it in my pocket.”
The prosecutor told the court that Hale who was walking east along Hadfield Street, Georgetown, was confronted by Richardson and Prince who relieved him of the phone and other articles.
Prince had nothing to say to the court in mitigation.
In arriving at sentence for them Magistrate Latchman took into consideration the serious nature and prevalence of the offence and the need to prohibit others from contemplating the crime.
