A Guyana Power and Light (GPL) employee, who is accused of attempting to murder his girlfriend and her eight-year-old daughter, was yesterday charged with two counts of attempted murder. Thirty-two-year-old Junior Benn, a linesman, of Courtland Village, Corentyne, Berbice, appeared before Magistrate Peter Hugh at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court.

Benn was not required to plead to the charges which stated that on April 8, 2020, at Courtland Village, he inflicted grievous bodily harm on Sojourner Johnson and Sheveika Cameron of Scottsburgh, Upper Corentyne, Berbice, with intent to commit murder. He was remanded to prison until next Tuesday.

It was reported that Cameron shared a relationship with Benn and she would regularly visit his home with her daughter. However, on the day in question, while at his residence, an argument erupted after Benn accused Cameron of having an affair.

It was further reported that Benn got upset and dealt the woman several cuffs to her face and body before slamming her to the ground in the presence of her daughter. The court heard that the child, upon seeing her mom being abused, attempted to stop Benn. The accused, however, dealt the child a cuff to her face causing her to collapse to the floor in an unconscious state.

Benn then allegedly took a green liquid substance in a bottle believed to be poisonous and poured it on Cameron’s face and mouth. Neighbours who heard what was transpiring went over to the residence and rushed the mother and daughter to the Port Mourant Hospital.

The matter was then reported and following investigation, Benn was arrested and charged for the offence.
