Two persons were killed in an accident last night, when the driver of the car they were travelling in, allegedly lost control of his vehicle and collided with the median on the Bagotstown, East Bank Demerara (EBD) Public Road before slamming into a concrete fence.
The accident occurred sometime around 21:30 hrs.
The deceased have been identified as Courtney Marcus, 19, of Lot 11 Peter’s Hall, EBD and 20-year-old Ronaldo Simmons of Lot 15 Azore Street, Peter’s Hall, East Bank Demerara.
They died at the Diamond Hospital Centre. The driver of the vehicle, 29-year-old Steven Roberts is currently hospitalized at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation. He is suffering from a punctured right lung, broken ribs and head injuries.
According to information received, the car in which the deceased were travelling in—PVV 7570—was proceeding south along the eastern carriageway of the Bagotstown Public Road when the right side front of the vehicle collided with the concrete median.
As a result of the impact, the driver lost control of the vehicle which careened into a concrete fence situated on the eastern side of the road and came to a halt after it slammed into a utility pole.
The driver and occupants received severe injuries about their bodies. They were taken out of the vehicle in an unconscious state by public spirited citizens and rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where Marcus and Simmons died.
The police said that the driver was speeding.
The fence which the car slammed into has been prone to several accidents in the past. The owner of the property, Faizal Razack opined that vehicles are taking the turn from Eccles to Bagotstown too fast and would eventually hit the median before veering into his property—and this is exactly the case with last night’s accident.
It is unclear if the occupants of the vehicle were essential workers. A few weeks ago the government implemented a 6pm- 6am curfew for the entire country to tackle the Covid – 19 pandemic. Every citizen is required to be off the roadways by 6pm daily except for essential workers.
