There is a perception that because only 67 persons have tested positive out of 328 tests done, that Guyana is not in a critical situation. However, the Public Health Ministry begs to differ.
“…Because 7 deaths out of 67 cases represent 10.4% which is much higher than the death rate of COVID-19 presented by WHO that stands at 2-4%,” the Health Minister, Volda Lawrence said this afternoon.
The minister’s revelation comes at a time comparisons are being made with regards to Guyana and the rest of the Caribbean countries.
Saint Lucia for example, had 15 confirmed cases of COVID-19. To date, all of the positive cases of COVID-19 in that country have recovered.
In Guyana, as of yesterday, 328 persons have been tested for COVID-19, of which 261 tested negative. The total number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 is 67 inclusive of seven deaths and 10 persons have recovered.
Seventeen persons are in institutional quarantine & 50 in isolation. There are three persons in the COVID- 19 INtensive Care Unit (ICU) with one person listed as critical.
Of the 67 positive COVID-19 cases, 63 persons have contracted the virus right here in Guyana.
Confirmed cases continue to climb, with the capital city Georgetown identified as the Epicenter.
Globally, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO) there are: 2, 397,217 confirmed cases with162,956 deaths.
In the Region of the Americas of which Caribbean States are a part, the number of confirmed cases is 893,119 with 42,686 deaths.
