Government has donated 20 tablet computers to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) to be used by COVID-19 patients in the Isolation Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The items were donated by the Ministry of Public Telecommunications.
The Isolation ICU has a capacity for 16 patients and was recently established to provide care for COVID-19 patients who require intensive treatment.
The tablets will allow patients in this unit to communicate with their family members since they are not allowed to have visitors while in isolation.
Meanwhile, GPHC officials believe that the tablets will provide psychosocial support for patients who are separated from their families during this difficult time.
Just recently, the Ministry of Public Telecommunications donated 30 tablet computers to the Guyana Prison Service.
The tablets will be used as a means of communication between prisoners and their family and lawyers, as visits to the prisons have been suspended indefinitely amid the COVID-19 outbreak here.
More than a year ago, government installed free Wi-Fi at the following prisons: Camp Street, New Amsterdam, Timehri, Lusignan holding Bay and Mazaruni.
Together, these prisons house just over 2000 inmates.
