A female pedal cyclist was killed around 20:40 hrs last night on the Fort Canje Public Road, New Amsterdam, Berbice.
The getaway suspect, who was driving PNN 3631, was nabbed hours later and told police that he was visiting family when the accident occurred.
The deceased has been identified as 39-year-old Raquel Edwards of Levi Dam, Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam.
The suspect has only been identified by the police as a 34-year-old mechanic of Stevedore, South Ruimveldt, Georgetown. He had passed a breathalyzer test.
Based on information received, around 20:40hrs last night, the car was proceeding east along the northern carriageway of the road reportedly at a fast rate—and—according to the driver, while negotiating a right bend, the pedal cyclist who was said to be proceeding in the same direction, suddenly turned right into his path.
This resulted in a collision and as a result of the impact, the cyclist sustained severe injuries about her body.
She was taken to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital in an unconscious state by passersby where she succumbed to her injuries two hours later while receiving medical attention.
A 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM curfew is currently in place to manage the spread of the Coronavirus which has affected the entire world and has so far claimed the lives of 10 persons locally. During this period, only essential workers are supposed to be on the road.
