A 50-year-old woman was today remanded to prison after being charged with abduction.
Beverly Gomes of 30 Kildonan, Corentyne appeared before Magistrate Crystal Lambert at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts where the charge was read to her virtually. She was not required to plead to the indictable charge and was remanded to prison until July 24.
Gomes was arrested last week with a four-month-old baby girl belonging to a twenty-four-year-old Venezuelan woman.
She was entrusted by the mother to take the baby to Georgetown for medical treatment and was expected to return with the child after two weeks but she never returned.
When she was arrested, she told ranks that the mother of the child had asked her to take the baby to a hospital outside of the Cuyuni/Mazaruni District, Region 7.
She told ranks that the woman handed over the baby’s birth certificate and other documents as she journeyed from Region 7 to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) with the baby.
She added that the baby was treated and she was told to take the baby regularly to the clinic for further check-ups.
However, the mother of the child was supposed to collect the baby three days later but failed to do so, hence Gomes took the baby to her home.
The matter was then reported and following an investigation, Gomes was arrested and charged.
