A 54-year-old man who admitted to killing his nephew back in 2018, has been sentenced to 27 months behind bars on a manslaughter charge.
He, however, has been released after he was sentenced to time served, which was calculated since his arrest.
Kendrick Armogan called Ricky of Essequibo Coast , was indicted by State Prosecutor Lisa Cave on a charge of manslaughter in relation to the unlawful killing of his relative. The charge alleged that on April 23, 2018, at Essequibo, he unlawfully killed his nephew, Naresh Ramdass.
In arriving at an appropriate sentence for Armogan, Justice Kissoon started at base of 25 years from which he deducted 1/3 for his early guilty plea. Further time was deducted for his pre-trial custody, and the fact that Ramdass was the aggressor, and his uncle’s actions were considered to be in self defence.
In the end, the judge imposed a 27 months prison sentence.
Armogan was represented by attorney-at-law, Ravindra Mohabir while the prosecution team was led by State Counsel Lisa Cave.
On the day in question, at around 12:45 hrs, Armogan and Ramdass had an argument in their yard. Shortly, after the argument, Armogam was exiting when his nephew followed and assaulted him with a wood.
A scuffle ensued between the men, and Armogan pulled out a knife and stabbed Ramdass. It was reported that after Ramdass was stabbed, he walked to the seawall where he fell and died. He was then picked up and taken to the Suddie Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The matter was reported and he was later arrested and charged for the offense.
