While some 163 persons – of the 337 infected with COVID-19 – have recovered, Guyana is still facing challenges with curbing the spread of the virus, which has resulted in the deaths of 19 citizens since March of this year.

According to the Deputy Chief Medical Officer (DCMO), Dr Karen Gordon-Boyle, the management of confirmed cases remains a “formidable hurdle”. She noted that Guyana would have confirmed 42 new cases in eight days, with a large percentage coming from Regions One (Barima/Waini) and 9 (Upper Takutu/Upper Essequibo).

See below a breakdown of cases and deaths in some of the regions:

Region Positive Cases Deaths
1 102 1
4 120 14
7 54 1
8 3 0
9 11 1

The official reminded that the hotspots in Region One are Moruca and Mabaruma;

Aranka, Bartica and Sulphur Rose in Region Seven (Cuyuni/Mazaruni); Itabac, and Mahdia in Region Eight (Potaro/Siparuni); and Lethem in Region 9.

She said that the Ministry has been intensifying its efforts in the hinterland Region, recognizing that the vast stretch of borders leaves residents in those bordering regions very vulnerable to imported cases.

“We also need to keep a watchful eye on our movement within and between our communities, and I am talking directly to those persons who knowingly have been close to positive persons. Our health workers are working assiduously to help to contain the spread of this deadly disease; let us be appreciative of their herculean efforts. We plead once again with all of you, notably in the areas alluded to above, to cooperate with the health workers, so that we can surmount this hurdle and arrest the upward trend which presently seems to be elusive. It is critical however that we monitor in the coming weeks the evolution of the incidence in all regions,” she said.
