A Partnership for National Unity + Alliance for Change (APNU+AFC) Campaign Manager, Joseph Harmon says that while he did not expect much out of the Court of Appeal in the Misenga Jones v. Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) et al., he is disappointed that the Court did not use the “opportunity at this juncture in the history of Guyana to make a judgment which was sound in law”.
Harmon said that the Guyanese people will certainly examine in a more “meticulous way” the manner in which their justice system functions.
“The APNU+AFC Coalition is committed to the rule of law and respect for decisions of our Court. We iterate that when the matter goes to GECOM that only valid votes will be counted in the final declaration made by the Chairman of GECOM. Fraudulent votes cannot be the basis for a final declaration to be made. This is our firm position,” he said.
The court, minutes ago, upheld the decision of Chief Justice Roxane George that the national vote recount is valid and that the Chief Elections Officer – a statutory officer of GECOM – must carry out the directive of the GECOM Chair, Justice (Retired) Claudette Singh.
