The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) is ‘likely’ to meet on Sunday, says the elections body’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Yolanda Ward.
The body will no doubt meet to discuss today’s Court of Appeal (COA) ruling, which saw the dismissal of an appeal brought by a supporter of the incumbent, Misenga Jones, in which she sought to have GECOM disregard the data generated from the Recount Exercise, and to have the Chief Elections Officer (CEO) impose his will on the Commission with regards to the utilisation of the previous declarations that were made by the 10 Returning Officers (ROs).
The COA upheld the Chief Justice’s ruling; specifically, as it relates to the relationship between the CEO and the Commission, and the validity of the recount data. It was upheld that the CEO is subject to the direction and control of the Commission, and therefore, must do as is requested of him, that is, compile his report utilising the recount data – as ordered by the GECOM Chair, Justice (Retired) Claudette Singh.
The appeal was dismissed for being vexatious and regarded as an attempt to abuse the court.
