One of the two men who allegedly chopped off the limbs of two miners during a robbery has been charged and remanded to prison.
Samuel Hinds made an appearance before Magistrate Crystal Lambert at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court.
Hinds was charged with robbery under arms, and felonious wounding committed on 31-year-old Tameshwar Sukram, a miner of 118 Enterprise Squatting Area, East Coast Demerara, and Jose Da Silva called “Lago,” 42, a businessman and miner of Apaiqua Landing, Mazaruni River. He was remanded to prison until September 10, 2020.
Hinds’ accomplice is presently a patient at the Bartica Hospital after he was accidentally chopped by Hinds.
It was reported that around 01:30hrs at Apaiqua Landing, Mazaruni River, Sukram was asleep in his apartment when he was awakened by two men, one armed with a gun and the other with a cutlass. The men assaulted Sukram and demanded that he hand over cash. However, when Sukram refused, one of the bandits dealt him several chops about his body with a cutlass, which resulted in his left leg being severed below the knee.
An alarm was raised, and Da Silva rushed to Sukram’s room, where he was also assaulted by the bandits. Da Silva received several chops about his body, which resulted in his left ring finger being chopped off. The bandits then made good their escape with $800,000 in cash. Sukram and Da Silva were rushed to the Isseneru Medical Health Centre, where they were treated and transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
The matter was reported, and following an investigation, the men were arrested.
