The role played by the Private Sector Commission (PSC) in the pre and post-election periods in Guyana, has indicated the body’s commitment to democracy and national development, says the Head of State, President Irfaan Ali.
He made this comment during the PSC’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), which was held virtually. It was joined by senior PSC officials, several members of the diplomatic community and other private sector representatives.
Ali, in his opening remarks spoke about the PSC involvement in the elections, and how its actions led the local charge in resisting election hijacking.
The PSC was indeed one of the local observers during the highly controversial March General and Regional Elections.
The President said that the PSC’s efforts undoubtedly gave its importance a “boost”.
He gave assurance that the government will work along with the PSC to ensure that there is a robust private sector. He also spoke about the need for both the government and private sector to work on a strategy for national development.
President Ali said that the PSC nor the government can work in a vacuum, and that both are needed to foster a better future for all Guyanese.
He committed to his government’s intention to help the private sector to achieve its goals, and at the same time, advance the administration’s development agenda.
Meanwhile, outgoing PSC Chairman, Captain Gerry Gouveia urged the PSC to continue on its path of development, now that a new government is in place.
Gouveia was appointed Advisor to the President on security. He will not be vying for a second term as the PSC’s head.
