Crime Chief, Wendell Blanhum has confirmed that robberies are being committed by some individuals protesting in West Coast Berbice over the murder of two teens.
“To date, we have received three reports pertaining to robberies. We had this morning a report whereby, the victim was relieved of his personal belongings by several individuals, who were wearing masks,” he reported.
More “troubling” the Crime Chief said, is that two of the suspects were armed with guns.
“So, that matter we will be treating with priority, and we will ensure that we make earnest efforts to arrest those individuals,” he told reporters.
He added that the police force has also received reports on vehicles and commuters being attacked by protestors.
The Crime Chief said that those victims have not yet come forward to make “official” reports to the police.
Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Chief of Staff, Godfrey Bess also issued a call for protestors to demonstrate peacefully, and not to target commuters and ranks of the Disciplined Services.
He said that while persons have a right to protest, they must do so within the confines of the law.
