The Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) is distancing itself from Commissioner Roshan Khan, and contentious comments he made on Social media.
Yesterday, the Opposition called for him to be removed from the body forthwith.
“He is no longer fit on the ERC, and must be removed forthwith,” said Leader of the Opposition, Joseph Harmon during an address to the nation moments ago. Harmon described Khan’s statement as “divisive” and “racial”.
Khan, in a Facebook post said that “Indians in Berbice need to create their watch and protection groups. Equipped with batons and sticks for self defense only. Be firm and clever but never be the aggressor. Protect minorities in your communities”.
His post was subsequently edited to read: “In Berbice Guyanese need to create their watch and protection groups. Equipped with batons and sticks for self defense only. Be firm and clever but never be the aggressor. Protect minorities in your communities”.
The ERC is a statement this morning, said that it wishes to disassociate itself from social media posts made by Khan.
The commission noted that Khan’s posts do not coincide with it’s mandate to promote harmony and good relations.
“The views expressed in the posts are not those expected of an ERC Commissioner and therefore, contradict the role and functions of the ERC.”
