Education Minister Priya Manickchand told students who sat this year’s National Grade Six Assessment, not to be discouraged if they were unable to get into top secondary school across the country.
During her address at the National Center for Educational Resource Development (NCERD), this afternoon, the minister related that given the limited number of spots available at the top schools, many students – despite doing well – may not gain access to these institutions. She said that there are 120 spots each at the Queen’s College, Bishop’s High School, St. Stanislaus College, St. Roses High School and St. Joseph’s High.
“We just don’t have the space,” the Minister said.
Notwithstanding this dilemma, Manickchand assured students and parents that the quality of education will remain standard wherever learners are placed; to give them the same resources needed for academic development.
Minister Manickchand said that students can still do well wherever they are placed. She referred to instances where students, who were not attending top secondary schools but still managed to cop top spots during sittings of the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations. This year, 14,032 student wrote the NGSA exams.
