The People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) will never go to another election under the stewardship of the current Chief Elections Officer (CEO), Keith Lowenfield, says Party Executive, Attorney General (AG) and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall.
“We will hold elections when elections are due. However, we are not mad people and therefore, only a mad person would want to go to an elections under the stewardship of Keith Lowenfield…Something has to really be wrong with any person who wants to go to an election under the stewardship of Keith Lowenfield and expects him to behave properly, and expects those elections to be conducted fairly and squarely,” he said during a live Facebook Programme “Issues in the News” earlier this week.
Nandlall was at the time debunking claims that the PPP/C is ducking from facilitating the hosting of Local Government Elections (LGEs) next year, and that he is canvassing for the postponement of this electoral process.
The AG said that the PPP/C does not have a “track record of dodging elections” but reiterated that changes must be effected at GECOM before another election is held. He assured that elections will be held, but with “proper people” in charge of the electoral machinery.
To that end, Nandlall said that Lowenfield does not enjoy the confidence of the majority of electors, and would have been condemned by all the political parties – with the exception of the A Partnership for National Unity +Alliance for Change (APNU+AFC) – observers and the international community for his conduct during the March 2020 General and Regional Elections.
The CEO is still facing six electoral fraud charges that were instituted against him earlier this month by the Guyana Police Force (GPF). Those six charges are: three counts of misconduct in public office and three counts of forgery. Lowenfield was released on a total of $300,000, bail for those charges and next month the matter will continue.
