Opposition Member of Parliament, Roysdale Forde had given the Clerk of the National Assembly, Sherlock Isaacs, 24 hours to provide the citizen renunciation letter submitted by the Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Oneidge Walrond.
Controversy erupted a few weeks ago when information came to the public’s attention that Walrond was sworn in as minister while being a dual citizen. A statement published by the Minister confirmed this to be true.
However, the Minister said that she had acquired her renunciation letter prior to her being sworn in as a Member of Parliament (MP). That letter was submitted to Isaacs a few days ago.
The Constitution bars persons who are dual citizens from being MPs. Forde now wants a copy of that letter. He said that failure by the Clerk to provide the renunciation letter within 24 hours will result in the institution of legal proceedings.
