Police are investigating the death of a four-day-old girl, from East Bank Demerara which occurred yesterday.
Enquires disclosed that the child’s parents went to the Georgetown Public Hospital yesterday, where the mother was scheduled for a routine checkup.
She told police that she arrived at the hospital and left the child with the father and elder daughter in the car, and proceeded to see the doctor.
She further stated that about 12:08 hrs, she returned to the car and observed that the baby was crying repeatedly and was breathing heavily. At that point she said she fed the child some water.
On the said date about 14:45hrs, she along with the child, her reputed husband and other daughter went home. However, the child was still crying and was breathing heavily as if she was suffocating. As a result, about 18:05hrs, the child was taken to a Berbice medical facility, where she was seen and examined by a doctor who pronounced her dead on arrival.
The body was examined and it was observed that something was amiss with the child’s lower body. The body was photographed by crime scene technicians and is presently lying at the hospital mortuary awaiting a post mortem examination. The parents are in custody assisting with the investigation.
