A labourer was yesterday charged with manslaughter for allegedly pushing his neighbour to death over cabbage.
33-year-old Rajindra Ramlall of Patentia, West Bank Demerara (WBD), appeared before Senior Magistrate Faith McGusty in the Wales Magistrate’s Court.
He was not required to plead to the indictable charge, which alleged that on November 7, 2020, at Patentia, WBD, he unlawfully killed 63-year-old Ronald Harrypersaud.
The accused was released on $200,000 bail and will make a next court appearance on December 10, 2020.
Media reports are that on the day in question, Harrypersaud had confronted the deceased about throwing cabbage waste into a trench near his home.
As a result, a heated argument ensued between the two. It is alleged that the accused reportedly cuffed the elderly man to the face during the argument and then pushed him.
Harrypersaud was picked up in an unconscious state and rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where he was treated and sent away. However, the following day, the man’s motionless body was found in his bedroom.
A Post-Mortem Examination (PME) conducted on the man’s body revealed that he died from brain haemorrhage due to blunt trauma to the head.
