27-year-old Devon Chacon was today sentenced to time served for the October 20, 2016, unlawful killing of Abdool Ameer Subrati, the father of two who was fatally shot by bandits when they stormed a house at Herstelling, East Bank Demerara (EBD).

Initially indicted for the capital offence of murder, Chacon opted to plead guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter following his appearance before Justice Navindra Singh at the High Court in Demerara.

Chacon was charged on October 24, 2016, for the killing at the age of 22.

Police said that two men, including a tenant at the Herstelling property, were picked out in identification parades as persons involved in the attack.

Subrati, 44, a driver with the Demerara Harbour Bridge Corporation, and Lot 21 Back Street, Peters Hall, EBD, was fatally shot after he put up a struggle with one of the two gunmen in the early morning attack.

He was rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre and later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), where he underwent surgery and then later succumbed at around 12.30 hrs, the said afternoon.

Following his guilty plea, Justice Singh sentenced Chacon to the time served while awaiting trial. He has already spent five years in jail.

Chacon was represented by Attorney-at-law Nigel Hughes and Associates, while Prosecutor Tuanna Hardy represented the State.
