A labourer is now a patient at the Suddie Hospital after he was chopped by a known drinking buddy of his on Monday afternoon.
The injured man has been identified as 29-year-old Mortimer Sooknanan of Centenary Street, Queenstown, Essequibo Coast. The suspect is said to be a 57-year-old miner of Anna Regina Squatting Area.
Reports are that Sooknanan and the suspect are known to each other and would usually be seen imbibing together. However, at about 16:45 hours yesterday, the victim and the suspect were drinking at the Anna Regina Squatting Area when a heated argument ensued between them.
As a result, the suspect pulled out a knife from his waist and dealt the Sooknanan a chop to his left side face.
Subsequently, the labourer visited the Anna Regina Police Station, where he made a report. He was issued with a medical form and was escorted to the Suddie Hospital by the police. He was seen and examined by a Doctor on duty and was treated and admitted as a patient in a stable condition.
Later that day, Police said that contact was made by the suspect, and a search was conducted on his person, and a knife was found on his waist.
“He was told of the allegation, cautioned, and admitted to chopping the victim, but he differed from the story claiming that he was attacked first by the victim,” the police said.
He was arrested and taken to the Anna Regina Police Station, where he was placed into custody. The investigation is ongoing.
