28-year-old Alvin Jones has pleaded not guilty to the 2017 murder of amateur footballer Paul Daniels, which occurred on February 2, 2017.
Jones, also known as “Hotskull” of Costello Housing Scheme, Georgetown, appeared yesterday before Justice Priya Sewnarine-Beharry. A 12-person jury was empanelled, and the trial is slated to commence on Thursday at the High Court in Demerara.
The accused is being represented by defence attorney Stanley Moore while Prosecutor Shawnette Austin is representing the State.
Jones was indicted for murder, which alleged that on February 2, 2017, at Independence Boulevard, Albouystown, he murdered Daniels, in the course or furtherance of a robbery.
Reports are that on the day in question, Daniels had just arrived at the home of his girlfriend, Christine Castillo, and was watching television when the two robbers, one of whom was armed with a gun, entered through a northern door which had been left open.
Daniels was relieved of the gold chain he was wearing and an undisclosed amount of cash.
Police had said that Daniels attempted to retrieve the stolen items and chased after the men, who shot him in his chest.
It was reported that the men hopped on their bicycles and escaped. Daniels was picked up and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
