– MV Barima also down with engine failure
MV Kimbia, which plies the Georgetown/Region One route is currently docked at a city wharf after it developed a hole in its bow. The situation unfolds a little over a year and a half after some $488M was spent to renovate the vessel. The MV Barima is also down following some sort of engine failure, sources from the Public Works Ministry say.
Guyana Standard understands MV Kimbia has a hole in its bow, and is currently in dry dock at the Guyana National Industrial Corporation. This vessel is expected to be fully operational by the end of January. As a result of both vessels being down, services to Region One have been interrupted.
Ministry of Public Works’ Public Relations Officer, Krest Cummings, has informed that every effort is being made in collaboration with the private sector to get the service up and running as soon as possible.
“We do apologise to the residents of Region #1 and stakeholders for any inconvenience this may cause. We will continue to update the general public on the status of the MV Barima and MV Kimbia and when they will be departing port Georgetown as soon as the problem is rectified. The rehabilitated MV Kimbia was commissioned by former Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson, in May 2019.
