More inmates and prison officers of the Lusignan, New Amsterdam and Timehri prisons have tested positive for COVID-19, the Health Minister, Dr Frank Anthony has confirmed. The development comes three months after some 200 Lusignan prisoners were cleared of the disease.
“Today, we do have a few cases at Lusignan, but those cases having been tested and identified, have been isolated in a special part of the Lusignan prison,” he said.
The minister added that four prison officers and an inmate have also tested positive at the New Amsterdam Prison. Those officers, the health official said, have all been sent to home isolate, while the infected inmate has been taken to a “special part” of the facility to be isolated.
The minister said that some 33 prisoners at the Timehri holding facility have also contracted the virus and have been placed into isolation.
“We have the medical staff from the prison services who are monitoring them, and most of them are asymptomatic and once they go through that 10-day period at the end of which they will be discharged from isolation,” he said during today’s COVIC-19 Update.
