A father of two was in tears as he apologized for stealing a gold chain just before he was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment.
23-year-old Miguel Blackman apologized to Trevannah Haywood moments after he admitted that on May 15, at Water Street, Georgetown, he stole a gold chain valued $60,000, from Haywood.
He appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts where Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan read the charge.
After his confession, the prosecutor told the court that on the day in question, Haywood was walking in a southern direction while at Stabroek Market when the chain was snatched from her neck. The court heard that Blackman ran away after he snatched the chain but the woman followed him.
Blackman fell to the ground and it was then that public spirited citizens were able to apprehend him and take him to the Stabroek Market Outpost. He was later transferred to the Brickdam Police Station.
Blackman, who said he has never stolen from anyone before, was in tears as he told the court that he had a rough childhood and has no one by his side. He said he became frustrated on May 15 after a man whom he owed money approached him.
According to Blackman, he borrowed the money to restock his business which is selling air fresheners and other miscellaneous products. He also said that he misses his children as he reiterated that he has never committed such acts before.
Before handing down the sentence, the Chief Magistrate told him that nothing comes easy and advised him to borrow money from the bank or an institution and desist from stealing to get by.
