Working hours of vaccination sites in the Capital will be extended to 8pm from this weekend, Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony said during today’s COVID-19 update. This will be done to enable the public to have more access to the vaccines currently being administered to the populace.

“As of this weekend, we will be implementing extended hours of work here in Georgetown, so we want to go about 8pm in the night and we’ll start that as an experiment to see whether or not we’ll get more people coming out,” the Minister said, while advising that persons should still go earlier in the day to avoid gatherings after hours at sites.

The Ministry currently has two types of vaccination centres: fixed and mobile.

The Minister said that all efforts are being made by his ministry to provide more access to vaccines. Just recently, the operations of centres were extended from 4pm to 6pm and the introduction of weekend openings.

“We hope that we can encourage the population to take advantage of this because we really want to immunise as much people as possible,” the Minister said.

He also reported that some 172,311 Guyanese have already received their first dose. This represents 35.4% of the adult population, with 38,467 or 7.9% receiving their second jab thereby becoming fully immunized against a severe form of the virus.
