The Civil Defence Commission (CDC) says it has responded to the needs of flood-affected citizens with the distribution of almost 30,000 food and cleaning hampers across the country.
In a release on Sunday, the Commission said a total 29,854 hampers have so far been distributed to affected households since May 18. Of that number, 15,960 are food and 13,894 cleaning hampers.
Most of the assistance was distributed in the severely affected Regions Five, Six, Nine, and Ten. Thousands of hampers have also been distributed to the other regions as emergency relief.
The report noted that shelters have been established in Regions Nine and Ten to provide a hospitable space for households greatly impacted by flooding.
Other aspects of the CDC’s response include the continued management of shelter operations at Kwakwani, Region Ten, and the provision of on-the-ground support and assessments in the Upper Mazaruni, Region Seven, and Region Ten.
President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali and Ministers continue to fan out across the country to assess the immediate needs of residents, while offering technical support to the Regional Emergency Response System.
Further, the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security has also been involved in the Government’s disaster response through the delivery of care packages to flood victims of Region Ten and other communities.
The CDC said it has been receiving relief supplies and financial assistance from the private sector, citizens, and various non-governmental organisations to aid its humanitarian efforts.
