A man who police say fled a murder scene is now remanded after being charged for the murder of a Hymakabra Village miner.

Charles Griffith, 28, of Lot 66 Robb Street, Georgetown, was this afternoon charged and remanded over the murder of Shane Blake, who was fatally shot at Apaiqua Landing, Mazaruni River.

The charge states that on June 22, at
Apaiqua Landing, Mazaruni River, he murdered Shane Blake. He was remanded until July 27.

Guyana Standard previously reported that Blake, 30, of Hymakabra Village, Moruca, was asleep in an abandoned building on Apaiqua Landing at about 5:20 am when he was awakened by the man who was armed with a handgun. He was told, allegedly, by Griffith to put on his clothes but instead armed himself with a cutlass.

He then dealt the man a chop to the shoulder and Griffith allegedly retaliated by shooting Blake in his chest.

The police had said that Griffith fled the scene immediately after while Blake was escorted by public-spirited citizens to the Isseneru Health Post where he succumbed to his injury.
