An aviation officer was today charged with causing the death of his best friend, who died following an accident at Nelson Mandela Avenue.

21-year-old Joshua Mentore of Lot 14 Patterson, East Coast Demerara, was before two Magistrates at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts. He was first taken before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly in courtroom one where he was charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

The charge states that on June 27, 2021, at Nelson Mandela Avenue he drove a motorcycle dangerous to the public causing the death of Kareem Powley, 20.

His attorney, Darren Wade made a successful bail application and mentioned that he was never charged before for any offenses. He asked for reasonable bail while awaiting the trial for the matter. The Court prosecutor did not object to Mentor being released on bail. He was placed on $150,000 bail with the condition that his passport remains with the court. He must also report to the police station every Monday at 9 am. The matter was adjourned until July 6.

Mentore also appeared before Magistrate Clive Nurse in Court Seven just moments after. He was charged with driving without a license, driving an uninsured motor vehicle, and driving an uncertified motor vehicle. He pleaded not guilty to the three charges and was placed on $55,000 bail. This matter was adjourned until July 22.

Powley of East La Penitence, Georgetown, who was a pillion rider on motorcycle CK 7783, driven by his best friend, Mentore, died after he was injured in an accident that happened along the Nelson Mandela Avenue on Tuesday at 22:30 hrs.

The police said that the motorcycle was proceeding north on the western carriageway of Nelson Mandela Avenue at a fast rate of speed when tragedy struck. Mentore told police that a black motorcar (number and make unknown), which was proceeding in the said direction to the right side of him, swerved left (west) and caused him to lose control.

He ran off the road and collided with a pile of stone that was on the western parapet of the said road. The duo subsequently fell onto the road’s surface, receiving injuries. Powley was picked up in an unconscious condition by the EMT but succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical attention. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
