Deputy Speaker and Opposition Parliamentarian, Lennox Shuman is recommending that the Government of Guyana (GoG) only issue grants and house lots to persons fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
Shuman’s call for such a policy comes even as vaccination remains optional in Guyana, and the county recording well over 22,000 cases since March 2020, along with 530 fatalities.
In a Facebook post today, Shuman wrote: “I would like to recommend that the GoG only provide the “Because we care” cash Grants and House Lots to the fully vaxed parents and those who are fully vaccinated.”
The Guyana Government is currently issuing “Because We Care” grants amounting to $19,000 to each child in the public education system, with talks ongoing to possibly extend that programme to students attending private institutions.
That programme was recently introduced in Region Three, with almost $400M earmarked for distribution. Officials are also in other regions.
The People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPPC) government has promised to deliver 50,000 house lots in five years.
