A sales representative was today released on $1Million bail by Magistrate Judy Latchman after being charged concerning the fatal accident which claimed the life of Stephen Bishop.
34-year-old Shivendra Ramraj of Lot 782 Herstelling, East Bank Demerara, appeared at the Providence Magistrate’s Court. He was read the charge which states that on July 25, at the Providence Public Road, he drove a motor vehicle dangerous to the public thereby causing the death of Stephen Bishop. He is also charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.
Ramraj was represented by attorney-at-law Bernard DaSilva who made a successful application for bail on his behalf. He was released on $1Million bail for the causing death charge and $10,000 bail for the DUI. Magistrate Latchman adjourned the matter until August 20.
According to a Guyana Police Force release, at about 18:55 hrs on Sunday Ramraj was driving motorcar PZZ162 along the Providence Public Road. He was allegedly proceeding south along the eastern carriageway of the road at a fast rate of speed when Bishop ran across the road.
Ramraj claims that on seeing Bishop, he applied his brakes to avoid a collision but the front center portion of his vehicle collided with the man. Bishop fell onto the roadway and sustained injuries about his body.
He was picked up in an unconscious condition and placed into the said motorcar before he was taken to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
A breathalyzer test was conducted on Ramraj and the first recording read 151 micrograms with the second test reading 161 micrograms of alcohol.
