A Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) spokesperson, Chelauna Providence, says that at no time was the Infectious Diseases Hospital at Liliendaal understaffed.
Her response came on the heels of claims made by the relatives of deceased Nurse, Vannessa Maynard, who was hospitalised there for over a week.
Maynard, 56, died on September 9, after she was admitted on August 29. The woman kept contact with her relatives and complained about neglect. Her relatives told the media today via a conference facilitated by the Parliamentary Opposition, the A Partnership for National Unity + Alliance for Change (APNU+AFC), that Maynard’s death was avoidable.
Reporters were told that during Maynard’s hospitalisation, there were four nurses tasked with caring for 64 patients.
Providence said this afternoon that the “4:64 quota is certainly not reflective of the situation at the facility”.
“With the increase in admissions over the past few days, we’ve had more than 20 nurses working per shift daily. As of yesterday, 18 additional nurses have been reassigned to the ocean view facility to assist with the management of patients. This is in addition to 9 additional doctors who have joined the current compliment of 13 doctors who work per shift,” she said.
She added, “At no point in time were there only four nurses in the facility. On the day that the vaccination requirements were implemented the facility had a compliment of 8 nurses on shift with 19 patients in the ICU.”
The APNU+AFC is calling for an independent probe to be conducted into the death of Nurse Maynard.
