Some 18,299 Guyanese, between the ages of 12 and 17, have already taken the first jab of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine, Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony said today. The programme, which was rolled out two weeks ago, has already seen 25.1% of the target group vaccinated. Those recipients are scheduled to take their second jab within 21 days.

Below is the regional breakdown:

Region One – 385 (14.3% of the target population)
Region Two – 1,134 (24.8%)
Region Three – 2,939 (27.9%)
Region Four – 7,354 (24.2%)
Region Five – 1,340 (27.5%)
Region Six – 3,209 persons,
Region Seven – 342 (19.1%)
Region Eight – 6 (0.6%)
Region Nine – 1,364 (57.6%)
Region 10 – 226 (5.8%)

So far, 65.2% (334,333) of the adult population have taken the first dose of a vaccine, with 33.9% (173,999) fully vaccinated.

Minister Anthony said that the country is ‘still far’ from achieving herd immunity. Herd immunity is a form of indirect protection from infectious disease that can occur with some diseases when a sufficient percentage of a population has become immune to an infection, whether through vaccination or previous infections, thereby reducing the likelihood of infection for individuals who lack immunity.

See below, the regional breakdown of the first dose taken by the adult population:
Region One – 73.6%
Region Two – 54.2%
Region Three – 61.6%
Region Four – 71.9%
Region Five – 64.1%
Region Six – 68.1%
Region Seven – 65.5%
Region Eight – 42.1%
Region Nine – 69.5%
Region Ten – 26.3%
