While several villages continue to record high numbers of new COVID-19 infections, those figures may not represent the true situation on the ground, says Guyana’s Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony. During his COVID-19 daily update today, the official said that the recorded figures could be an underestimate of the actual number of infections because of the decrease in regional testing.
“In every region we have a number of cases, but that varies because some regions are not testing as they should. So, for example, in Regions One, Six, Five, Seven, Eight, Nine and 10, they can do much more testing, but they’re not testing as much. Therefore, we might see that the numbers in those regions are artificially low. So, it’s an underestimate of what is happening in those regions,” he said.
Guyana has over 3,000 active cases, with more than 700 deaths recorded since March 2020.
The Minister said that the number of cases in ‘hotspots’ has increased exponentially within the last week.
