Police are investigating a fatal accident that occurred around 10:00hrs this morning along the Eccles Public Road, East Bank Demerara (ECD).
Dead is 77-year-old Jasodra Samwaru of Grove Squatting Area East Bank Demerara (EBD).
Enquiries disclosed that motor lorry, GVV 1309, driven by Anand Ugraj, 36, of lot 219 Foulis Housing Scheme, ECD was proceeding south along the road when tragedy struck.
Guyana Standard understands that the lorry had just departed the traffic light when it collided with the pedestrian who was crossing the road from east to west.
As a result of the collision, the pedestrian fell onto the roadway and the front left wheel ran over her.
She was later pronounced dead by a doctor attached to the Emergency Medical Service unit at the scene of the accident.
The pedestrian was taken to the Carmen Funeral Home.
A breathalyzer test was conducted on the driver and no trace of alcohol was found. He remains in custody and a notice of intended prosecution was served on him as investigations continue.
