As COVID-19 continues to wreak havoc at home and abroad, Guyana’s Health Minister, Dr. Frank Anthony is urging citizens to be cautious since three regions have been recording high numbers of infections.
Guyana has 3,907 active cases, with 59 new infections reported within the last 24 hours, the Minister said during his COVID-19 update today. “What we’re seeing is a slight decrease in cases in Region Four, but we’re seeing an increase in cases in Regions Three, Two, Region 10…So, these are the areas right now that we see cases going up. So, we have to be careful in those regions and make sure that people are adhering to the precautions and getting vaccinated,” he said.
The Minister emphasised that more persons need to get vaccinated to lessen the number of hospitalizations and death.
The October 17, 2021 dashboard shows the death count at 870 from 34,455 confirmed infections since March 2020. All of the Districts, except Region Eight (Potaro-Siparuni), have surpassed the 1000 mark.
Dr. Anthony reported today that there are 107 persons hospitalised across the country. Seventy-two (72) patients are housed at the Infectious Disease Hospital, Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara, with 24 persons in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
In terms of vaccination, some 373,398 persons, 18 years and older, have received a first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. This represents 72.8% of the adult population, with 231,729 or 45.2% fully immunized.
Meanwhile, some 26,391 persons between the ages of 12 and 17 have received a first dose of the Pfizer vaccine with 17,379 receiving both jabs. This represents 36.2% and 22.5% of the adolescent population respectively.
