A Sophia man was today committed to stand trial at the High Court for the murder of his brother-in-law following the end of the preliminary inquiry (PI).

25-year-old Martin Blair, a mason of Lot 578 Seven Street ‘D’ field Sophia was today committed to stand trial for the murder of Daniel Boutrin. He appeared before Magistrate Roshell Liverpool at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court where the preliminary inquiry concluded.

He was charged in March with the murder committed on Daniel Boutrin. It is alleged that on March 15, 2021, at ‘D’ Field Sophia, he murdered Boutrim.

Police Prosecutor Visram Ramjattan prosecuted the matter. Magistrate Liverpool found that there is sufficient evidence to commit Blair for the offense and to stand trial at the next practical sitting at the criminal assizes.

Guyana Standard understands that Boutrin, 23, died at the Georgetown Public Hospital just two days after he was stabbed during an argument with Blair, who is reported to be his brother-in-law. According to the police report, Blair and Boutrin, who was in a relationship with Blair’s sister, got into an argument over a bicycle that Boutrin borrowed last year and subsequently lost. It was reported that as the argument escalated, the suspect picked up a cutlass while Boutrin armed himself with a knife.

Police said the suspect’s parents intervened and asked Boutrin to leave. As he was about to enter a taxi, he was then confronted by the suspect who stabbed him several times.
