Former Finance Minister, Winston Jordan was this morning arrested for misconduct in public office, Opposition Leader, Joseph Harmon has confirmed.
Jordan served as Finance Minister during the A Partnership for National Unity + Alliance for Change (APNU+AFC) government and has faced intense criticism in the past surrounding his conduct. He was also fingered in the alleged “hiding” of a multimillion US-dollar singing bonus from oil giant, ExxonMobil. It was received during the early stages of the David Granger-led APNU+AFC regime.
According to Harmon, the arrest is “atrocious” and tantamount to harassment. He is accusing the government of using the Guyana Police Force (GPF) to muzzle Jordan and those who are unsupportive of the administration.
“Now this is one of the most atrocious pieces of action by the PPP administration. They indicated this earlier, but certainly we never believed they would have gone to such depths to actually file a charge for a matter which is already before the courts in a civil jurisdiction and that is before Justice Brassington Reynolds. So, as far as I am concerned, this is just about harassment of Mr Jordan,” Harmon said.
Harmon said that the party has dispatched legal representation to Jordan’s aid and gave assurances to the former Minister’s family and friends that the party will “stand solidly behind him”.
“The plans of the PPP will be thwarted. They are seeking to silence the voices of those who speak out against them. This will not silence Winston Jordan. In fact, it will bring up many more Winston Jordans who will speak up as loud as Winston Jordan and even louder,” he said.
