Guyanese over 60 years old are leading recipients of COVID-19 vaccines in the country, Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony disclosed during his COVID-19 update today. He said that 80.4% of the over-60 category have received the first dose, with 68.6% taking both jabs. Overall, some 404,122 persons above the age of 18 have taken the first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, with 283,505 taking both doses. These figures represent 78.8% and 55.3% of that population respectively.
According to the Minister, this is “fairly good” but there is room for improvement, noting sloth in uptake in specific age categories. He noted that the 40 to 59-year-old population has recorded relatively low vaccination numbers with 78.8% receiving a single jab and 60.7% taking both doses.
The lowest vaccination uptake has been recorded within the 18 to 39-year-old age range with 75.1% and 48.1% taking single and double doses respectively.
The Minister reminded that a single dose would provide some protection but is unlikely to be enough especially for those persons who have underlying illnesses. Citizens must take both doses to prevent hospitalization and death, he said.
The minister added that there are enough vaccines in the country to vaccinate every citizen. He said that there is no excuse why persons should not come forward and take a jab. Some 3,189 booster doses have been administered to date.
