Following disclosures that Guyana has recorded approximately 1300 COVID-19 cases in 48 hours, Health Minister, Dr. Frank Anthony said citizens have been rushing to testing facilities.
While persons are justifiably concerned about contracting the rapidly spreading Omicron variant, the minister is urging individuals to wait at least five days before getting tested.
During a joint press briefing with President, Dr. Irfaan Ali and other officials, the minister said symptoms of the latest Omicron variant would not be present immediately if one comes into contact with an infected person.
Dr. Anthony said, “…Not because you have been exposed you think you have to go do testing. Even if you have been exposed it would take at least four to five days before the tests show you are positive; there is that window period so people need to understand that.”
He added, “But once you test negative you should return to work.”
The Health Minister was keen to note that the authorities have a proper handle on the COVID-19 situation despite the surge in confirmed cases. He noted that there is national capacity to do 2000 PCR tests per day. He said too that antigen testing facilities are also available.
As for the COVID-19 Hospital in the refurbished Ocean View Hotel, the Health Minister said it has capacity for 195 patients. It currently houses 36 infected persons with 5 in ICU. He also noted that all regional hospitals have been equipped with the requisite resources to handle COVID-19 patients.
