Joseph Harmon has quietly resigned as Opposition Leader with immediate effect, leaving several supporters, and the nation by extension, in the dark. He officially informed the Speaker of the House, Manzoor Nadir of his decision less than three hours before the commencement of the 36th Sitting of the National Assembly of the 12th Parliament today at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre, Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
Harmon, following the People’s National Congress Reform’s (PNCR) Biennial Congress last December, where he lost to Aubrey Norton, has faced calls to step down, with political pundits and the PNCR’s Central Executive Committee expressing the desire that the PNCR Leader and Opposition Leader should be one and the same, as is customary.
Harmon, who served as State Minister under the David Granger-led administration resigned as General Secretary of the multi-party bloc and one-half of the main Parliamentary Opposition, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) yesterday. He, however, remains as Opposition Member of Parliament.
According to the Speaker, the Opposition Chief Whip, Christopher Jones has communicated that he will report on the Opposition’s availability to convene a meeting to elect the new Opposition Leader.
The PNCR nor the APNU have communicated Harmon’s resignation.
