The People’s Progressive Party Civic Administration has made significant strides in honouring its commitment to provide 50,000 jobs to Guyanese, with an allocation of $2 billion for the construction of call centres and other co-investment projects.
Approved by the National Assembly’s Committee of Supply Tuesday, Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Oneidge Walrond, M.P, said centres will be erected in Regions Two and Six.
The project falls under the Business Development, Support and Promotion programme within the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce.
On December 4, 2021, President, Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali told residents at Sheet Anchor, Region Six, that government would provide the necessary infrastructure to stimulate job creation and economic growth within the region, through the establishment of a call centre.
At the time, President Ali said, “the Minister of Finance was in discussion with a major call center that is willing to bring investment in Region Six, that will create at least 500 jobs. We are now working in the new budget to put the money, to put the infrastructure in place, to have this investment realised as quickly as possible.”
The Administration has already seen much success in job creation numbers in Region 10 where government has delivered on its promise to facilitate investment in that region’s call centre which was closed under the APNU-AFC Coalition.
Linden’s Midas BPO call centre plans to employ some 1,000 by the end of this year.
