All 40 workers currently attached to the Enmore Packaging Plant will be hired by Guysons K+B Industries Inc, the company that is about to take over the facility and transform it into an oil field service center.
“You will not lose employment; you will not lose earnings,” is what Minister of Agriculture, Zulfikar Mustapha told the workers this afternoon. He made that and other announcements during a meeting at the Packaging Plant.
Most workers were present at the meeting which was also attended by Minister of Health, Frank Anthony; Vice Chairman of Guysons K+B Services, Fazil Khan; and other officials attached to GuySuCo and the Ministry of Agriculture.
During the meeting, workers were told of an agreement between government and the investing company that allows every one of them to remain employed.
Noting that there will be a transition period, Minister Mustapha said that the decision has already been made by government to provide “at least” two month’s salary to all workers. He said that this will allow for a “smooth transition.”
Workers questioned what will become of the field staff that supported that packaging plant.
Mustapha explained that they will not be affected, they will continue as they are. He then stressed, “The Government of Guyana will not abandon the working people of this country.”
GK+B’s Vice President, Fazil Khan noted that the aim within the next five years is to hire 500 persons to work at the new facility. He told the workers that he was informed of how hard working they are and therefore, he is happy to have them onboard. “Having you will make my work easier.”
Khan indicated that the workers will be trained for their new duties. He said that some workers will be trained in specialized areas, for example, the operation of machinery. While, others will be trained on how to operate in a more general manner.
Guyana Standard understands that the transition referenced is what will allow the company to bring the facility to a fit for purpose working order. This publication understands that there are quite a few repairs needed for the structure. It was noted that the facility was rendered dormant for some time and that may be cause of the lack of maintenance. The roof of the facility needs extensive repairs as one worker was overheard saying, “is worries when it rains.”
GuySuCo will need to remove all its machinery before repairs can begin. This is expected to be done in a timely manner as Minsiter Mustapha announced that GK+B Industries is expected to take control of the facility by the end of February.
This publication understands that equipment worth over US$7M are already on the ground.
