A man who told the court that he found a gun while digging a hole in his yard was today charged and remanded to prison on an illegal firearm charge.
Paul Bishop, 32, of Lot 37 Laing Avenue, West Ruimveldt, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
He denied the charge which stated that on October 9, 2018, at Freeman Street, East La Penitence, he had in his possession a .32 revolver when he was not a licensed firearm holder.
The visibility distraught man told the court that he suffers from depression and, was on his way to the station to hand over the gun when he was arrested by a party of police officers.
Facts presented by Police Prosecutor, Dinero Jones stated that on the day in question, police officers were carrying out raid exercises in the Freeman Street, area when they saw the defendant riding a bicycle.
The defendant was stopped by the officers and a search was conducted on him. The illegal firearm was found in a black bag.
When told of the offence, the defendant said “ Officers I found the gun when I was digging the sand in front my gate.”
He was then told of the offence, hence charged.
The Chief Magistrate, after listening to the Prosecutor’s facts, remanded the defendant to prison until October 31, 2018.
