The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) says it is still to determine the cause of a fire at Golden Grove, East Bank Demerara, yesterday, that has left several persons homeless and millions of dollars in damages.
The GFS said it received a call at 11:44hrs yesterday and was alerted to a fire at Lot 160 Reid’s Avenue. It said that Water Tenders #95, #107, #115 and Water Carrier #14 from the Central Fire Station, Diamond Fire Station and West Ruimveldt Fire Station were immediately dispatched to the location.
Upon arrival, firefighters observed the two-storey wooden and concrete building engulfed in flames. The building was owned by Lenox Reid and Bibi Reid who reside in the United States of America.
The building housed several businesses, namely BRT Paint Store, L&M Reid and Sons Hardware Store and T&S Reid Sale Industry. It was also occupied by Rommel Reid and a family of three.
As a result of the fire, the building and its contents were destroyed.
Also affected by the blaze was a two storey wooden and concrete building located at Lot 189 Rase Avenue.
Due to radiated heat from the building of origin which subsequently ignited, the entire top floor of the building was damaged and the bottom floor sustained water damage.
Investigations are being conducted by the Fire Prevention Department to ascertain what caused the fire. Meanwhile, the GFS continues to encourage citizens to equip their homes with smoke detectors and fire extinguishers and to adhere to safety measures in order to protect their homes and loved ones from fire emergencies.
