Minister of Labour, Joseph Hamilton said that the increases for the public sector signals the government’s intention to make the lives of Guyanese better, especially with high food prices on the market.
He noted that despite public opinion, next year’s salary adjustment for the joint services, teachers and other classes of workers will see more income for public sector workers.
Minister Hamilton also believes that with Government increases, it is now the Private Sectors turn to do right by its workforce. “We are at a place now where the private sector will have to compete with the public sector. For decades it was the other side.” Hamilton said.
President Dr. Irfaan Ali announced Thursday night an eight per cent across-the-board retroactive increase for public servants.
He noted that adjustments will be made to the salaries of junior ranks of the Police Force, Prison Service, Fire Service and specific categories of employees in the public healthcare system, including nurses, interns, doctors and other healthcare professionals will be announced next week.
President Ali stated that work will start immediately to ensure the increase is processed and paid to eligible employees with their December salary.
