Activist and Politician Dr Veerasammy Ramayya was charged today with a cybercrime offence at the Springlands Magistrate’s Court. Dr. Ramayya denied that he made liable comments during one of his live social media broadcasts earlier this year.
It is alleged that Ramayya, 75, using a computer system, harassed and humiliated Surujdyal Sahadeo called ‘Pandit Dave’, 43, of Crabwood Creek. He was allowed his pretrial liberty and released on his own recognizance.
Outside the courthouse, Dr. Ramayya told reporters that the charge against him was baseless while adding that he believed there might be a political motive to embarrass him.
“All of the allegations he made against me are fake. And there are so many other things that I said that could have caused this so whatever had been fabricated here I believe it stems from my recent resignation… trying to get me out of a job” Ramayya said.
Ramayya said that his discussions on social media, via his Facebook page, has covered a number of issues including corruption and also has taken a swing at former colleagues in the political arena about their corrupt practices.
This is the first time however he has been made to answer for his actions via the courts, according to Ramayya. “I think this is an injustice to me… It is all political as far as I am concerned. I don’t see it any other way.” Ramayya said.
Meanwhile Attorney-at-law Mirza Sahadat told reporters that his client was charged under the wrong legislation. He noted that under this section of the cyber crime act, anyone could be found culpable.
“I don’t see why the law should have been used in this case to prosecute Mr. Ramayya. I feel it is persecution in this case. This is where someone is using his influence to have Mr. Ramayya charged. Anybody can be offended.” Sahadat said.
Ramayya will return to court on February 20, 2023.
