Government is not taking the challenge of domestic violence lightly. In fact it has moved to partner with stakeholders to implement measures aimed at bringing about a comprehensive understanding of violence with a view of halting this social dilemma.
At an event at the Kingston, Georgetown Umana Yana, the Ministry of Public Security yesterday
launched what is being described as an ‘intervention’ which will help to combat violence. The ‘intervention’ is in fact a project which will be implemented by the Public Security Ministry under its Citizen Security Strengthening Programme (CSSP) which is funded by the Inter- American Development Bank (IDB).
At the launching ceremony representative of partnering agencies shared strategies and policies
employed to manage crime and violence in their areas of specialisations. In fact at yesterday’s
forum it was revealed that the Parenting, Interpersonal Violence Prevention and Conflict Resolution Intervention are being facilitated by ADCO Engineering and Consulting Incorporated.
In his feature address at the forum, Public Security Minister, Khemraj Ramjattan, said, “I want
to say that our government is trying its best in a very substantial way to help adolescents and
youths both perpetrators and victims who should be in school and otherwise gainfully occupied
to help in the prevention of this violence.”
He noted the need to nurture the existing talents of the at-risk youths and not allow their idleness to lead them down the wrong paths. He, moreover, added, “Reducing crime and violence is high on government’s agenda because both crime and violence pose a real threat to public security and to the human rights and of all Guyanese.”
The Public Security Minister also emphasized the need for a comprehensive understanding of violence even as the government, along with other stakeholders, strives to curb the daunting impact of violence.
